So I was accepted to Company X and asked when I should book my physical for the VISA application and she told me I absolutely did NOT have to complete a physical - it was in fact illegal. They can't deny me a job for any of those health reasons. I thought it was very intrusive but required for Asian companies b/c they're so strict - I told her as much and she said companies will tell you this but it's not the case. If they are hiring you from Canada they must abide by Canadian rules.
The health certificate for JET requires a blood test, urinalysis, AND a chest x-ray among other things! Chest x-rays are pretty serious and dangerous for your body and having someone do it when a skin test will tell you the exact same thing is just not right. It makes me even angrier that I answered all these personal questions for JET and EPIK. How intrusive! I'm so glad I chose Company X :)
So beware when you're applying to all these jobs that ask you these questions. You can choose to go along with it or you can question it but face the chance of being rejected. When I tell JET I'm not going with them I'm going to address it with them. Chest x-rays are not standard and could be hazardous and it's illegal. I wonder what they'll say...

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions...
Well I finally heard back from JET - I'm on the alternate list. This means I could be called anytime between now and the 2nd week of December to go teach with them in Japan. Not exactly what I was hoping for. But on the other hand I was offered a position with Company X!!!
Amazing news!!!! One catch though - I was planning on leaving in September to allow me time to get ready and sort through my life here in Canada. I e-mailed my recruiter after waiting a considerable time and she told me that for September there were only a few openings and none of them were urban - only rural. Not what I wanted at all. Then she said if I'm interested in a July departure I should let her know. I spoke with her and asked if I should see what happens for October and she said some placements came in and they were few and most were for rural areas. She said she's never seen such few openings for positions. I guess that means they must be a good company that everyone wants to stay with. So I told her I'll take July - who knows when I position will come available for me for the fall?
Then I get this voicemail yesterday from my infectiously happy recruiter who had great news for me. The other recruiter in the States had a teacher drop out last minute in the Greater Tokyo Area and she wants to offer it to me!!! It would be for July 10th and is exactly where I want. My original choices were Shibuya and Shinjuku but there are no schools there. This school is located in Yokohama which has some pretty amazing draws for me. I would stay in a city about 20 minutes away and they'd pay for my commute. AND Tsuzuki, the city I would live in, in only 35-45 minutes away from Shinjuku and Shibuya!!! Amazing!!!
The contract looks amazing and I discussed it with my important people and...I'm going!!! I have to reply that I want the position and they'll send me my papers to sign and all that good stuff :) Tres excited!!! Now I need to book a flight...
